Day 8

The weather was beautiful, the roads were well paved and the ride was smooth into Checotah, Oklahoma, which is about 100 miles east of Oklahoma City. We arrived around 1:15, settled in and had some lunch. We headed to the KOA front desk to ask about the ‘Must See’ sites in the area. We were really interested in visiting the USS Batfish at the Muskogee War Memorial Park. Unfortunately due to the damage from a flood in May of 2019, which caused the ship to start floating to the Arkansas River, it was closed to tourists.
On the KOAs recommendation, we headed in to Checotah, hometown to Carrie Underwood, Rich’s USO girlfriend from Iraq. Lol Other than that big claim to fame, this town was pretty barren and dated. We thought about driving around to find Carrie’s family farm, but decided to grab a picture of her high school instead and head back to the campground to relax.
Back at the KOA, we took a short walk up the nature trail to Lake Eufaula. On our way we stopped at the Campground’s barnyard, with Jasper the donkey, and met a friendly couple heading from California to Florida for a 4 month trip. We told them we were from Upstate NY, Saratoga County. The wife had said that her sister lived in Upstate NY for 20 years. When I asked, she said from a small town called Clifton Park! Small world.
The rest of the evening, we relaxed around the campsite playing Giant Jenga, which was a blast, enjoying the campfire and catching up on episodes of This Is Us and A Million Little Things. It was a great day of relaxing. In the morning, we are off to Wanderlust Crossing RV Park in Weatherford, OK.
Destination Checotah/Lake Eufaula West KOA, OK
This campground is much more spacious and well kept than the last with more amenities.
