Day 2
April 6-April 7
We arrived at the Harvest Hosts Deer’s Leap Winery around 1:30.  The weather was absolutely gorgeous. Temps were in the mid-70s and the sun was shining.  After we quickly set-up, we made a bee-line to the winery in search of their Chocolate Strawberry wine we heard people rave about.  After a taste test, we were hooked.  Along with the liquid chocolate covered strawberries in a bottle, we thought we’d grab a Cherry Almond wine as well.  Once we heard it tastes like Amaretto, how could we not!
After lunch and a glass of Cherry Almond wine, we headed north to ‘the Strip’ at Geneva-on-the-Lake.  This is a super popular tourist attraction during the summer.  It is very reminiscent of the 1950s roadside attractions of restaurants, pizza and ice-cream joints, arcades, mini-golf and pubs.  We had fun exploring the Firehouse Winery and grounds with the old Ferris wheel, the local antique shops, reading the historical placards along the side streets and standing on the shores of Great Lake Erie.  We learned that the founder of Oldsmobile, Ransom E. Olds was born and raised here too.
We headed back to the camper, had dinner and played a few rounds of Rumikub.  After Rich lost to Rumikub, I thought I’d cheer him up by taking a ride up the road to the Nationally Registered Harpersfield Covered Bridge. It is the 3rd longest covered bridge in Ohio, spanning the Grand River and was built in 1868, destroyed by a flood in 1912 and rebuilt with a steel span added.  We had fun walking the unique bridge while watching lots of people below fishing from the banks of the river.
After our little outing, we called it a day.  Tomorrow morning we rise and shine early for our 6 hour road trip down to General Butler’s State Resort Park campground in Carrollton Kentucky.
