Day 8
April 13
We had a short 3 hour ride across Oklahoma to Weatherford, which is an hour west of Oklahoma City, but boy did it seem long.  There was lots of much needed road construction being done on I-40.
When we arrived at Wanderlust Crossing RV Park, we had a beautiful spot with a paved pull-through. We were looking forward to relaxing outside, but the temps and strong winds prevented that plan.  So we headed over to the Thomas P. Stafford Air and Space Museum.  It was an unexpected surprise to find such an interesting and large museum that not only included lots of displays and information about its namesake, but also had lots of original displays about flight, the history of the NASA Space program and the history of early aviation. The highlight for me was to find my childhood hero ‘Snoopy’ on display!  I was so happy to learn that Commander Stafford named his Apollo 10 Command Module and Lunar Module after my Peanuts’ pals.  As a kid I didn’t realize that Charles M Shulz incorporated real world events with his Flying Ace and Red Barron comic strips. History having been made.
After the museum, we drove into Weatherford along Historic Route 66.  Like Checotah, we didn’t find much to explore, but we did learn that it is a hub for the Wind power industry, which would explain all the windmills we saw in the surrounding area.
We finished our stay with a nice grilled salmon back at the campground, took Tucker for a walk and stood in awe of the number of humongous 5th wheels and travel trailers.  I can’t imagine towing one of those! We ended the night with Rich reclaiming bragging rights by beating me at Yahtzee. He’s very happy for his victory.
We are off to Amarillo in the morning!

Destination- Wanderlust Crossings RV Park, Weatherford, OK

Beautifully manicured and maintained park.  We always love a pull-through that's level.

Walking around the campground, we couldn't believe the size of some of these rigs.  Most people are full-timers crisscrossing the US with great stories to tell.

Named in honor of Weatherford native, legendary test pilot and astronaut.

Rich's favorite Air Force plane, the  A-10 Warthog anti-tank plane.  I was impressed he knew what it was.

F-1o4 'Star Fighter'. First flown in 1956. First aircraft to break twice the speed of sound.

Thomas Stafford's mom came to Oklahoma in a covered wagon and lived to see her son fly to the moon. Incredible!

A model of the Wright Flyer.

This is also a model of the Spirit of St. Louis.

The most famous WW1 fighter, the Sopwith Camel. The machine gun was synchronized with the propeller.

The Red Baron!  Watch out Snoopy.

And there he is! NASA's longest serving Space Explorer. Tom Stafford Apollo 10 Commander chose 'Snoopy' as his lunar module and 'Charlie Brown' for the name of his Command module.

Gemini Spacecraft with Mission Control console in the background.

The Eagle has landed!

'Charlie Brown' slammed into the atmosphere at a speed of 24,791 mph.  The all-time human speed record that still stands today.

Pop on George Strait and it's time for 'Amarillo in the Morning'!
